Do Not Sulk

Stop Dwelling!

It’s 10a.m., the deadline for an important work project is at 11, and all you can think about is the fight you had with your boyfriend/girlfriend, this morning. Now that’s dwelling!

It's very natural to do some introspection now and then, but while most people pull out of it when they're done, an over thinker will stay in the loop.
Engrossing yourself in contemplation frequently, quite often leads to depression. So if you're prone to obsessing, and you know who you are, try these tactics to head off the next head spinning mental cycle.

Find a Distraction!

Turn on the fun-factor. Start the music and dance; watch some cartoon on the television (remember, no sad sagas pls!), go out for a walk, whatever engrosses you—for at least 10 minutes. That is the approximate time needed for a cycle of thoughts to be broken; or choose to focus on something. Try counting the number of times a particular ad is shown during your favourite TV show! "By the time it’s done, you will stop ruminating."

Delay!

Tell yourself that you can obsess over your issues from 8 to 9 p.m., all you want, but until then, you're banned. It’s likely that by 8p.m., you'll be able to have a much clearer outlook towards the thing which was troubling you.

3 Minutes of Inwardness!

Try this! Just for a minute, close your eyes and acknowledge all the thoughts which are going through your mind. Now, in the next minute, simply focus on your breathing! During the last minute, expand your awareness from your breath to each and every part of your body. By concentrating this way, you will be able to see the questions that are bothering you, with less urgency and to reconsider them from a different perspective.

Don’t be Afraid of the Results!

Ask yourself the dreaded question!
"What's the worst that could happen?" and "How would I cope?" Visualizing yourself dealing with the most extreme outcome, should indeed alleviate some anxiety. Then consider the possibility that the worst might really happen. Then what!

Now, look at the best possible result! By this point, you'll be in a more positive frame of mind and will be better able to assess the situation, being more realistic.

Communicate!

Share your thoughts with a close friend or relative, who understands you, to point out to you your pluses and minuses! It’s always good to have a third party outlook to stop yourself from loosing it and get a grip on reality!

Learn to Move On!

Tell yourself “Well! I’m just human"

Accept that you're human and are allowed to make some mistakes, don’t be too hard on yourself and then move on! It's harder than it sounds, so you’ll have to keep practicing.
